In my time since coming to Sorrento I have had the opportunity to eat so much amazing food in the local area<\/strong>.<\/p>

From antipasto to pastas to dessert, I hope to try it all before I have to leave this wonderful place.<\/p>

One thing that intrigued me<\/strong> when coming to Italy was aperitivo<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>

Though very similar to the American concept of \u201chappy hour<\/em>\u201d, Aperitivo<\/em> is more of a pre-meal drink that is meant to increase your appetite<\/strong>.<\/p>

Aperitivo<\/em> can be had before lunch or dinner<\/strong>, and you can always see people drinking a spritz at one of the local bars<\/strong>.<\/p>

This also typically comes with small finger foods and snacks<\/strong> such as tiny pizza frittas, nuts, olives, and marinated vegetables.\u00a0<\/p>

Also, whenever I see fried zucchini flowers on a menu<\/strong> (which is very often in Sorrento) I always order them!\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>

Growing up, at my grandparents house my grandfather kept a small garden where he would grow vegetables such as zucchini and tomatoes, as well as carefully tend to his fig trees.\u00a0<\/p>

Just before zucchini starts to grow, a flower blossoms on the plant.<\/p>

This was always so exciting for me and my sister because that meant my grandmother would be making us fried zucchini flowers.\u00a0<\/p>

Finding them in a restaurant in the United States is a hard feat, but here in Sorrento there are so many<\/strong> amazing restaurants that serve them<\/strong> with their own twist.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

A typical pasta<\/strong> of the area that was said to have been created in Amalfi in the 1960s is Scialatielli<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>

This is a short rectangular pasta, thicker<\/strong> than tagliatelle<\/strong>, that has a slightly curvy shape<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>

This type of pasta is typically served with fresh shellfish<\/strong> which Sorrento is very well-known for given the town\u2019s coastal location.\u00a0<\/p>

Another dish called Gnocchi alla Sorrentina<\/strong><\/em> takes its name from Sorrento<\/strong> where the dish was created.<\/p>

It is said that a chef cooking in a restaurant in Piazza Tasso received a bag of potatoes<\/strong> that had been brought to Italy from the Americas<\/strong>.<\/p>

Experimenting with how to cook them, he ended up creating gnocchi<\/strong>!<\/p>

This dish is typically prepared with tomato sauce and mozzarella<\/strong> and it is always one of my favorites to order.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

A local dessert<\/strong> made from the area\u2019s famous lemons is Delizia al limone<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>

This dome-shaped dessert consists of a sponge cake soaked in a limoncello-based syrup and filled with a lemon custard.<\/p>

Coated in a lemon glaze this dessert is a must try in Sorrento as well as along the coast.<\/strong><\/p>

A specialty of Naples<\/strong> that is also especially popular in Sorrento is the Sfogliatella<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>

There are two types<\/strong> of sfogliatella, riccia<\/em> and frolla<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>

Riccia<\/em> is the Neopolitan version with a flaky and crunchy outside, while frolla<\/em> has a shortbread crust.\u00a0<\/p>

I have had some good sfogliatella from Italian bakeries in the United States, but none compare to some of the ones I\u2019ve had in Sorrento and Naples!<\/p>

Until coming to Italy, I had never heard or seen sfogliatella frolla before, but both are absolutely delicious<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>

You also simply cannot forget about gelato! There are so many great gelaterias in Sorrento where you can try more typical flavors or even some more creative ones as well.<\/p>

I recently had gelato sandwiched in a brioche bun<\/strong> and it is definitely a must-try<\/strong> that you can find in many of the local gelato shops.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The area is also very well known for its wine<\/strong>!<\/p>

Just a short train ride away, I went to a family-owned winery near Pompei for a wine tasting and lunch over the weekend.<\/p>

The wine Lacyrma Christi<\/em><\/strong> is made from grapes native to the area surrounding Mount Vesuvius<\/strong>.<\/p>

Caprettone<\/em> grapes are used for white wine, while Piedirosso<\/em> grapes are used for red.\u00a0<\/p>

The mineral-rich volcanic soil allows the grapes to flourish, making the Campanian region one of the best for wine production.<\/p>

There are also many other types of local wines at other wineries near and in Sorrento, as well as to be enjoyed with a delicious meal.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
