This past week, I had the exciting experience of visiting<\/strong> the official headquarters of Massa Lubrense\u2019s Archeoclub<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

What is Archeoclub? \n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Archeoclub d\u2019Italia<\/strong><\/em> is an association<\/strong> that is all over Italy with individual organizations<\/strong> in different areas throughout the country.<\/p>

Each of these sub-organizations of Archeoclub d\u2019Italia have their own management and members, and they do their own archeology work in their area<\/strong>.<\/p>

Their mission<\/strong> is to preserve the history of Italy<\/strong> and by doing this, allow people to put pieces of the past together to gain knowledge and keep it safe for future generations to learn about it.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Massa Lubrense\u2019s Archeoclub was created 50 years ago<\/strong>.<\/p>

Stefano Ruocco is the president<\/strong> and has been a part of it all from the very beginning.<\/p>

I was lucky enough to ask him questions directly and gain insight from such an important person to this mission.<\/p>

He conveyed to me that the goal of Archeoclub is to save and then to protect<\/strong> what they saved.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Hearing from Archeoclub Interns<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

I was fortunate enough to be able to talk with two fellow Sant\u2019Anna internship students, Samantha and Jenna<\/strong>.<\/p>

They are both studying interior design<\/strong> at their home university, but their internships are at Archeoclub in Massa Lubrense.<\/p>

They<\/strong> were gracious enough to bring me to Archeoclub\u2019s headquarters, show me around, introduce me to who they work with<\/strong>, and allow me to ask questions regarding what they do.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Projects of Archeoclub<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

They walked me through the projects they are currently working on<\/strong> and what they have previously worked on.<\/p>

Their semester started off with them designing a website all about Massa Lubrense<\/strong> – an \u201copen museum<\/em>\u201d to build the story of the place instead of just giving information.<\/p>

They built it themselves, visited numerous sites<\/strong> around the town to obtain historical information<\/strong> and explanations, and then transported it all to their website for visitors to see everything that Massa has to offer, in English.<\/p>

Their current project is super exciting<\/strong>, for both them and for Archeoclub.<\/p>

They are using their background and knowledge in interior design to execute an Archeoclub museum + meeting place concept.<\/p>

This is to show the community what Archeoclub really is<\/strong>, what they\u2019ve discovered and will continue to, and to provide a space to tell history specific to this area.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The highlight of my visit was definitely playing a matching game.<\/p>

This was with photographs of still in-tact artifacts and then the correct corresponding pieces of the actual artifacts.<\/p>

I played along with Samantha and Jenna.<\/p>

We only had a few minutes to match the pieces together, and I did not do too well.<\/p>

It was so much harder than I imagined and I gained so much admiration for archeologists who do that for a living.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The Archeoclub<\/strong> just recently orchestrated their 7th annual festival<\/strong>, \u201cBookSophia<\/strong><\/em>\u201d.<\/p>

This<\/strong> is a three day festival that aims to invite others to learn and understand the history<\/strong> + roots of where we are.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>

There\u2019s three major ancient roots<\/strong> that are focused on through BookSophia: Latin<\/strong>, Greek<\/strong>, and Mediterranean<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The Latin roots focus on Heritage<\/strong>.<\/p>

In this context, the Roman Empire history<\/strong>, what was built, and what it means to be a citizen.\u00a0<\/p>

The Greek roots refer most to the idea of<\/strong> citizens becoming members of a community<\/strong> and taking part in said community, the part past just becoming a citizen.<\/p>

Lastly, the Mediterranean roots shine through in customs and commonalities in a culture<\/strong>.<\/p>

For example, in Italy, offering someone a coffee, an espresso, is something common that communicates something unsaid, like making someone feel welcome or comfortable.\u00a0<\/p>

All three of these come together during BookSophia to create a large space<\/strong> where everyone is comfortable.<\/p>

Everyone is welcome to come and learn<\/strong>, celebrate, and engage in their community.\u00a0<\/p>

I am super excited to see what else is to come from Archeoclub and to keep up with their current work.<\/p>
