In Naples stands a terrifying<\/strong>, silent<\/strong> giant<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>

This giant\u2019s skin is rock and he towers over the buildings of Naples. <\/span><\/p>

The quiet giant sleeps and waits for his time to wake up<\/strong> and cause more destruction than he did 2,000 years ago. <\/span><\/p>

Vesuvius<\/strong><\/em> is his name and he is one of the most famous volcanoes in history<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>

Vesuvius <\/span>wiped out towns such as Pompeii<\/b>, <\/span>Herculaneum<\/b>, Opolntis, Stabiae and more.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The volcano\u2019s destruction buried these towns<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>

However, many preserved buildings stand empty with nature growing through their cracks. <\/span><\/p>

The atmosphere creates an eerie ghost town for guests to walk through with heavy hearts. <\/span>This destruction stands at the front of everyone\u2019s minds when mentioning 79 CE and Vesuvius. <\/span><\/p>

But no one thinks about the towns farther<\/strong> from the famous ones that also took a hit from this giant\u2019s club<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The ground violently shakes in Pompeii. It vibrates in Herculaneum. Buildings fall in Naples, Sorrento, and even Capri.<\/p>

Everyone feels the wrath of Vesuvius as it blows its top off<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>

People panic as they run to safety or the harbor. They hide or hop on boats to take them away. Everyone does not know what this is<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>

Infact, there is not even a word for it<\/strong>. But the ones that were closest to the volcano sensed they would die if they did not do something.<\/span><\/p>

These people thought Vesuvius was a mountain because it had not erupted for centuries<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>

Due to this, it had a lot of built-up pressure<\/strong>. Then, the pressure was so great that it blew Vesuvius\u2019s top off and affected the entire area around it more than normal.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

This includes places that are miles<\/strong>\u00a0(or kilometers)\u00a0away<\/strong>.These towns<\/strong>\u00a0(as Naples, Sorrento and even Capri Island)\u00a0only saw a severe earthquake<\/strong>\u00a0and a toxic ash cloud<\/strong>.<\/p>

According to scholarly sources,\u00a0Sorrento hit an estimated 6.28 on the Richter scale<\/b>.<\/p>

Since Sorrento is 13.9 miles (22.5 km) from Vesuvius, this earthquake caused moderate to severe damage.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

It is Sorrento<\/strong> (or Surrentum<\/em>), Italy 79 CE<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>

Everyone wakes up and starts their day<\/strong>. Servants run around in villas trying to get everything prepared for their masters. Farms attached to these private villas race to begin their tasks.<\/span><\/p>

Further in town at the main square, merchants set up shop. People run from booths and places to get items for the day, and others go to work. <\/span><\/p>

All is peaceful<\/strong> in this beautiful resort until minor tremors shake the earth<\/strong>. Concern spreads but no one notices the small ash cloud from Vesuvius and they think nothing is wrong<\/strong>. Everyone moves on.<\/span><\/p>

Then in the height of the afternoon, Vesuvius is holding a funnel cloud 12 feet high<\/strong> (over 3,5 Km).<\/p>

Everyone stops and watches. Soon<\/strong>, the earth shakes<\/strong>, Vesuvius roars, and the funnel drops<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>

Ash rains down. The cobblestones violently shake underneath the people\u2019s feet<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>

The people of Sorrento duck and cover: they hide from the giant\u2019s club across the bay!<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Sorrento\u2019s inhabitants<\/strong> can not see well due to the ash raining down. But can see enough to make out the shapes and features of people<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>

The severe earthquakes<\/strong> that follow this rain shake and destroy buildings<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>

The town\u2019s Horologium falls. Roofs collapsing and buildings falling puts everyone into a panic<\/strong>. Nobody knows what is happening or about the tragedy across the bay.<\/span><\/p>

This is only a guess of what it was like to see Vesuvius erupt from a distance. It was a terrifying experience for everyone!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

Despite the unclear extent of Sorrento\u2019s loss, it is nowhere near the destruction of places swallowed by Vesuvius. But the destruction of Sorrento’s sundial<\/strong>, or Horologium, is a notable event<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>

In the following year, Emperor Titus rebuilt the town\u2019s Horologium<\/strong>. There is a plaque commemorating this in Sorrento\u2019s Museo Correale di Terranova<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Another remaining scar<\/strong>\u00a0from Vesuvius is a small black sand beach in Sorrento\u2019s Marina Piccola<\/strong>.<\/p>

The black sand is from the dark gray ash of Vesuvius<\/strong>. Over time, ash breaks down and washes ashore.<\/p>

This breakdown is the ash eroding and it creates a volcanic beach, that is\u00a0a dark color ranging from black to dark brown.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

After this<\/strong> tragedy, Sorrento rebuilt and grew<\/strong> into what it is today.\u00a0 <\/span>However, the towns of Pompeii<\/strong>, Herculaneum<\/strong>\u00a0and more places were not so lucky. <\/span><\/p>

Ash and lava buried these places along with the people that remained.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Although this, the survivors<\/strong> of this tragedy relocated to other towns<\/strong> like Naples, Cumae, Ostia, and Puteoli (actual Pozzuoli).<\/span><\/p>

It is unknown if some<\/strong> survivors resettled in Sorrento<\/strong>. But it is possible since most survivors stuck to the coast of Southern Italy.<\/span><\/p>

These survivors continued to thrive and rebuild from this event<\/strong>. Some survivors married each other, continued their family businesses, or found their way in the world. <\/span><\/p>

Despite these happy endings, this tragedy<\/strong> affected thousands and c<\/strong><\/span>hanged how we view volcanoes today<\/strong>!<\/p>
