On Tuesday, July 16, 2024, I had the opportunity to hike Mount Vesuvius<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>

After a guided tour of Pompeii, the next stop on the full day adventure organized by Get Your Guide<\/em> was a hike up the infamous volcano also known as the Sleeping Giant<\/em><\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The bus ride<\/strong> from Pompeii to the trailhead was filled with glorious views<\/strong> of the now distant towns below.<\/p>

Artistic statues representing gods<\/strong>, Mount Vesuvius, and the ancient people from Pompeii decorated the<\/strong> narrow and windy ascending road<\/strong>.<\/p>

Nature itself has formed art, for in the shape of a neighboring mountain can be found a profile view of il gigante characterized by a large nose.<\/p>

This \u201cgiant\u201d is the namesake of the gorge between Mount Vesuvius and Mount Somma<\/strong>, which is Valle del Gigante<\/b><\/i> (Valley of the Giant).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Yellow flowers<\/strong> known as “Ginestre<\/em><\/strong>” are characteristic plants<\/strong> at the foot of Mount Vesuvius<\/strong>, and they are most prominent in May.<\/p>

There were still some on this July day dotting the edges of the pathway, swaying in the ocean breeze.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The foliage of the valley and<\/strong> the area surrounding the volcano was lush<\/strong> and bright green, an example of life returning after destruction<\/strong>, a common theme here. <\/span><\/p>

A July 2017 wildfire on Mount Vesuvius ravaged the slopes, affecting about seven square miles of wildlife. <\/span><\/p>

Seven years later there are small scars of the past, but it is otherwise fully recovered. <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

In the midst of World War II, March 17<\/strong>, 1944 marked the day of Mount Vesuvius\u2019s most recent eruption<\/strong>, and its remnants pave a pathway of pumice stone, a hike through history.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Reaching 1,277 meters<\/strong>, the highest peak offers<\/strong> cooler summer air and a panoramic view of Naples and neighboring cities<\/strong>, the Sorrento peninsula, and the nearby islands.<\/span><\/p>

Although the trail<\/strong> is only about 4 four kilometers, it is almost entirely uphill<\/strong>, making for a somewhat strenuous journey in the July heat. <\/span><\/p>

There are multiple snack and souvenir spots along the way to stop and enjoy the view while resting in the shade. <\/span><\/p>

It is the type of hike that can take 30 minutes or up to two hour<\/strong>s, simultaneously a leisurely experience and an intense workout<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Along the trail there are multiple viewpoints of the crater, which is about 450 meters wide and\u00a0<\/strong>300 meters deep<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>

Photos cannot capture the depth of such an opening in the earth. <\/span><\/p>

Years of history are encased in these walls<\/strong> of rock and stone.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

A<\/strong>s I found myself at the end of the trail<\/b>, it seemed to also be the beginning.\u00a0<\/p>

With sunlight glistening on my sweaty skin, dust embedding in my existence, rocks crunching under my feet, and cities bustling below, I couldn’t help but feel on top of the world and at the end of it.<\/strong><\/p>

All at the same time.<\/p>
