In the range of Sorrento traditions<\/strong>, along with the famous Holy Week Processions,<\/a> a custom<\/strong> that is renewed on August 14 each year<\/strong> should be mentioned.<\/p>

This is the cult of the “Dormitio Mariae<\/em><\/strong>,” better know as “the procession of the Dead Madonna<\/em><\/strong>” and is organized by the Archconfraternity of Santa Monica, based in the Church of the SS. Annunziata.<\/p>

The aforementioned Archconfraternity organizes the White Procession<\/strong> in the early hours of Good Friday.<\/b><\/p>

Therefore, on the night of August 14<\/strong> – through the narrow streets of the historic center – the beautiful statue representing the Sleeping Virgin<\/strong>, lit only by candles, is carried in procession<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The theme of The Dormition of the Virgin<\/strong> (and related worship) comes to us<\/strong>, first, due to the<\/strong> religious manifestations<\/strong> that have survived the Dogma of the Assumption (1950).<\/p>\n

However, it is mainly due to the many art evidences<\/strong> over the centuries if today we know this aspect of the Christian religion.<\/p>\n

The artists, in fact, taking their inspiration from the Apocryphal Gospels<\/strong>, have told in pictures the cycle of the Dormition<\/em><\/strong>, Assumption into Heaven and <\/em><\/strong> Coronation of the Virgin<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

We Found an admirable example<\/strong> of the Dormitio\/Coronatio theme<\/em> in the frescoes<\/strong> held in the chapel of Santa Lucia<\/strong><\/a> (1385) in Massaquano (Vico Equense)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

In the booklet “Arciconfraternita di S. Monica<\/em>“<\/strong> (1989), written by Antonino Cuomo on the occasion of the 550th anniversary of the namesake archconfraternity, we discover the history of this<\/strong>\u00a0tradition<\/strong>.<\/p>

The attention to this Marian worship<\/strong>, in Sorrento, appears<\/strong> relatively late: it is 1907<\/strong>;<\/p>

The Archbishop of Sorrento at that time, Arch.<\/strong> Giuseppe Giustiniani, authorized the cult<\/strong> upon the suggestion of Nicola Mangiardino<\/strong>, priest of the Archconfraternity of St. Monica.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Thus, by<\/strong> its own decree<\/strong> dated August 13, 1908<\/strong>, the cult of the Dormition was authorized<\/strong>, granting-in addition-a plenary indulgence of 100 days for anyone who kissed Our Lady’s foot.<\/p>

The “Dormitio Mariae<\/em>,” therefore, becomes the latest religious initiative adopted by the brethren devoted to Marian cults and keepers of the effigy of the Dead Virgin Mary.<\/p>

The ritual of the procession of<\/strong> the “Madonna Morta<\/em><\/strong>” would go on<\/strong> for<\/strong> several decades.<\/strong><\/p>

In 1960<\/strong> the procession was moved to August 14<\/strong>, the eve of the Assumption.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

However\u00a0the procession underwent a drastic change.<\/p>

Since 1965<\/strong>, in fact, the liturgy was limited to the Chiesa of SS. Annunziata<\/strong>, by moving – in procession – the statue from the chancel to the sacristy.<\/p>

During the days of the feast, the statue remained on display for the faithful<\/strong>, only to be placed back in its niche<\/strong> made as a sign of devotion by confrere Guglielmo Davide in 1945.<\/p>

The Virgin<\/strong>, depicted in “mortal” sleep, is fashioned in a white dress with an<\/strong> ornate veil<\/strong>; two cherubs hold a golden crown<\/strong>, made in 1989 out of popular devotion.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Although it does not enjoy the same notoriety as the Holy Week processions, the “Madonna Morta<\/em>” procession today regains its original character in some aspects.<\/p>

Actually<\/strong>, in fact, the Procession of “Madonna Morta”<\/strong> – on August 14 – is a real<\/strong> “Peregrinatio Mariae<\/strong><\/em>.”<\/p>

The statue, is accompanied on pilgrimage from the Chiesa of SS. Annunziata to another church in Sorrento<\/strong>.<\/p>

Walking along the surrounding streets, the statue first reaches<\/strong> the adjacent hospital for a blessing to the inpatients<\/strong> and then proceeds<\/strong> to a nearby church for the Holy Mass.<\/p>

After that,<\/strong>\u00a0the procession retreats<\/strong> to the Chiesa of SS. Annunziata for the final blessing<\/strong>.<\/p>
