There is an innate desire in human nature to reside near the sea. <\/span><\/p>

It is one of the top tourist destinations<\/strong> in almost every country with a coastline, but there may be another reason why people have gravitated towards the seaside Sorrento<\/strong>, Italy since ancient times.<\/span><\/p>

The city\u2019s name, Sorrento<\/strong>, probably derives from<\/strong> the Roman name of Serentum<\/em> or Sirentum<\/em><\/strong> meaning \u2018Land of the sirens<\/em>.\u2019 <\/span><\/p>

The region of the Sorrentine Peninsula and the island of Capri are home to legends<\/strong> written into<\/strong> Homer\u2019s Greek epic, <\/span>The<\/i> Odyssey<\/i><\/strong>, where the hero himself, Odysseus, resisted the temptation of sirens. <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Odysseus found himself in these<\/strong> Mediterranean waters on his venture home from Troy to Ithaca<\/strong> after the ten-year Trojan war that took place in Homer\u2019s previous epic, <\/span>the Iliad<\/span><\/i>. <\/span><\/p>

The story goes that after being warned of Sirens by the sorceress<\/strong>, Circe<\/strong>, he hears the songs of the beautiful half-bird women on the rocky cliffs off Capri and Sorrento.<\/span><\/p>

Then he ties himself to the mast of the ship<\/strong> and makes his crew plug their ears with beeswax. <\/span><\/p>

The Sirens in the Mediterranean originated from women who were granted wings by the Greek goddess Demeter so they could search for her daughter, Persephone.<\/span><\/p>

She was abducted by the God of the Underworld, Hades. <\/span><\/p>

When these women did not return with Persephone, Demeter condemned them to live on the rocky cliffs by the sea. <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The Legends of the Sirens are the reason Sorrento has its name<\/strong>, and you can still feel the mysticism of these entities while sailing around<\/strong> the Sorrentine Peninsula and the rocky Island of Capri.<\/span><\/p>

There are many ferries that leave from the marina every day to locations such as Capri, Positano, Amalfi, and Ischia where you can see Sorrento from a different point of view.<\/span><\/p>
