Sorrento\u2019s immense presence of tourism continues to grow<\/strong>, but<\/strong> it turns out that the gravitation towards the peninsula is not new<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>

Sorrento has always been a desirable place to live<\/strong>, so much so that it has been inhabited by many different cultures <\/strong>and empires dating back to 4,000 BC<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>

From ancient civilizations to political invasions, the Bay of Naples and surrounding land have been sought after since human presence here.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The earliest human activity detected<\/strong> in the Sorrento area dates to the Gaudo Civilization<\/em> in 4,000 BC<\/strong> during the Copper Age. <\/span><\/p>

Objects such as flint<\/strong> daggers<\/strong>, ceramics<\/strong>, and tombs have been discovered from this period<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>

Some of these surviving artifacts remain in the Archeological Museum of the Sorrento Peninsula in Piano di Sorrento – (“Georges Vallet<\/i>” Museum in Villa Fondi).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In 600 BC, Greek settlers discovered the Sorrento Peninsula<\/strong> and saw its great potential<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>

They founded Naples<\/strong> as the important port that remains today. “Naples”<\/i> comes from ancient greek \u039d\u03b5\u03ac\u03c0\u03bf\u03bb\u03b9\u03c2 – “Neapolis<\/i>“, “New City”.<\/span><\/p>

Naples became a great military and trading port for the Greeks<\/strong> which turned it into a bustling city as even today it remains the third largest city in Italy<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Grecian presence<\/strong> on the Bay of Naples can be seen today in architecture<\/strong> and even within the origin of the city\u2019s name, but most famously, it is written into many Ancient Greek legends. <\/span><\/p>

The Greek city of Naples was overturned to Roman rule in the third century BC<\/strong> with the expansion of the Roman Empire. <\/span><\/p>

The port of Naples continued to thrive under Roman rule and the Sorrento Peninsula was where the wealthy Romans built holiday villas<\/strong>, which are both reasons for the region\u2019s tourism still in the current day. <\/span><\/p>

Pompeii and Herculaneum <\/strong>are both Roman civilizations of the region that have been preserved due to Mount Vesuvius\u2019s tragic eruption in 79 AD<\/strong>, though they offer a glimpse deep into the past. <\/span><\/p>
