I\u2019ve now been in Sorrento for 7 weeks<\/strong>! This time flew by, I can\u2019t believe it\u2019s already been almost 2 months.<\/p>

As I take time now to reflect<\/strong> on how this first half of the semester has been, I\u2019m realizing<\/strong> just how much I\u2019ve learned about Sorrento<\/strong> and how much more there is to see!<\/p>

Simply looking through my camera roll, I see so much beauty: both in the views and in the community Sorrento has to offer.<\/p>

Having this internship has been great at pushing me out of my comfort zone<\/b> in a good way, allowing me to discover new places and attend events that I might not have had the courage to go to by myself if I didn\u2019t have a mission to write about it.<\/p>

This immersion into Italian culture has been a great way to become more familiar with Sorrento<\/strong>.<\/p>

The classes I\u2019m taking at Sant\u2019Anna Institute<\/strong> focus on Italian history and language and have definitely helped my knowledge of Italian culture grow<\/strong>, but there is something different about walking out into the streets of Sorrento and experiencing it for myself.<\/p>

One of the first traditions I had the privilege of experiencing was for Sorrento\u2019s patron saint, Sant\u2019Antonino<\/strong>.<\/p>

This was when I began to notice the feeling of community<\/strong> created when so many people come together to celebrate, and I got to be a part of it.<\/p>

The parade in particular<\/strong> was so different than anything I had seen before and it was a truly insightful look into how a town\u2019s patron saint is honored<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The second festival<\/strong> and parade I was able to see was for Carnevale<\/strong> and this had an entirely different feeling.<\/p>

This parade,<\/strong> rather than feeling solemn and honoring, was a celebration that seemed to be aimed towards children<\/strong>, bringing fun, familiar characters down the streets as people threw confetti and sprayed each other with silly string<\/strong>.<\/p>

Attending this, I was amongst families and many children in costumes, reminding me of Halloween parades and celebrations I had seen in the US.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Although at times I\u2019ve felt a bit out of place, I\u2019ve loved getting to experience pieces of Sorrento\u2019s local traditions firsthand<\/strong>!<\/p>

Being able to explore places in and around Sorrento has been a blast, seeing new sights and experiencing new foods, culture, and history!<\/p>

Being in Italy really does feel like there is a piece of history on every corner<\/strong>. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

From Sorrento<\/strong>, it is<\/strong> also fairly simple to visit other places<\/strong> and I\u2019ve had so much fun going by train and bus<\/strong> to other places in Italy like Pompeii<\/strong>, Naples<\/strong>, and Rome<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>

But it\u2019s always nice at the end of these trips getting to return to lovely Sorrento!<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The opportunity to capture Sorrento in writing and images for About Sorrento has been a splendid way to<\/strong> reflect and share about what I have seen<\/strong> throughout my time here in Sorrento!<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

As<\/strong> winter ends and spring begins<\/strong>, there are some exciting traditions<\/strong> in Sorrento to look forward to<\/strong>!<\/span><\/p>

The biggest ones are the processions of Holy Week<\/a><\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>

Since arriving in Sorrento, I\u2019ve heard from multiple people about these<\/strong> traditional processions, and I\u2019m looking forward to<\/strong> finally experiencing them<\/strong> for myself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

These<\/strong> processions occur on Holy Thursday and Good Friday<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>

As they are leading up to Easter, they represent the Passion of Christ<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

La <\/i>Processione Bianca dell\u2019Addolorata<\/i><\/strong>, The White Procession of Our Lady of Sorrows represents the search by <\/strong><\/span>Mary<\/strong>, Jesus\u2019 mother for her captured son. <\/span><\/p>

It is called the White Procession in reference to the color of the robes and hoods worn by those<\/strong> in the procession.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

La Processione del Cristo Morto<\/strong><\/em>, the Procession of the Dead Christ. As the name suggests, this solemn procession includes a statue of the dead Christ<\/strong>.<\/p>

Like the White Procession, this procession is called the Black Procession due to the color of the robes and hoods worn<\/strong>.<\/p>

In addition to these processions, I\u2019m looking forward to the other traditional aspects<\/strong> of Holy Week, in particular the food<\/strong>!<\/p>

Palme di confetti<\/em><\/a>, confetti palms are sugar coated almonds arranged to look like<\/strong> branches and flowers and are gifted to friends and family<\/strong>.<\/p>

Pastiera Napoletana<\/em><\/strong> is a traditional pastry<\/strong> from Naples made with ricotta cheese<\/strong>, cooked wheat<\/strong>, sugar, eggs, milk, and orange blossom water.<\/p>

Casatiello<\/strong><\/em>, Easter bread comes in sweet and savory varieties.<\/p>

The savory casatiello has ham, cheese, salami, and black pepper.<\/p>

This bread is in a circular shape which references the crown of thorns placed on Jesus\u2019 head<\/strong>.<\/p>

Neapolitan tortano<\/em> is this savory Easter bread but has whole eggs on top, as symbols of life.<\/p>

I\u2019m looking forward to seeing these processions and trying these foods<\/strong> and writing about them<\/strong>, and in just a few weeks you\u2019ll be able to read about my experience!<\/p>
