This is the chorus\u2014and heartrending refrain\u2014of\u00a0\u201cCaruso,\u201d<\/span>\u00a0one of Italian musician and star Lucio Dalla\u2019s most famous works. It was\u00a0certified platinum<\/span>\u00a0by<\/span>\u00a0FIMI<\/span>\u00a0(A.K.A. the Federation of the Italian Music Industry) and has been covered by Julio Iglesias, Luciano Pavarotti, and Josh Groban.<\/p>\n

Over the last week, I\u2019ve listened to at least most of Dalla\u2019s album once, and it\u2019s clear to me that his status as a cultural icon known for his\u00a0poetic lyrics, eclectic style, and a mixture of influences like classical, jazz, and fado<\/span>\u00a0make his music some of the loveliest I\u2019ve ever heard<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The Creation of Caruso<\/span><\/h3>\n

Dalla wrote \u201cCaruso\u201d in dedication to the Italian tenor <\/span>Enrico Caruso<\/b> written at the Sorrentine Hotel Excelsior Vittoria. While Dalla had intended to leave Sorrento, a broken boat made him remain. In an ironic twist, Dalla booked the same hotel room that Caruso had lived in when at the Excelsior Vittoria.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

While at the hotel, Dalla heard stories of Caruso\u2019s last time at the Hotel Excelsior Vittoria. <\/span>Despite Caruso\u2019s throat cancer,<\/b> he continued to teach his love<\/b>\u2014a young, female student named Dorothy Park Benjamin\u2014<\/span>how to sing.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Dalla\u2019s tribute echoes this concentration of love and death into a ballad with <\/span>subtle references to Caruso\u2019s life <\/b>such as his success as an artist in America and, later, his last years of life in Naples.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Local Love for Lucio Dalla<\/span><\/h3>\n

Even now, decades since \u201cCaruso\u2019s\u201d release, the adoration Sorrento has for Dalla is palpable!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Near the train terminal, the <\/span>Neapolitan street artist<\/b> Jorit <\/b>painted Dalla in <\/span>vivid blue hues <\/b>and <\/span>ornate, intricate detail <\/b>that serve as a reminder to Dalla\u2019s contributions to Italian culture. When I stood before the mural, I felt on a real level the amount of connection Sorrento and artists have to one another. From Caruso to Dalla to Jorit, <\/span>Sorrento is somewhere that seems to spur visitors and locals alike toward artistry, beauty, and inspiration.<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Another mural of Dalla in Sorrento is featured at <\/span>SyArt<\/b><\/a>, a contemporary art gallery. \u201cSorrento Loves Art,\u201d an aptly named piece drawn by <\/span>Tv Boy<\/b> shows Dalla with Caruso and the Italian actress Sophia Loren. Located near the Villa Communale, <\/span>this mural is in the heart of Sorrento.<\/b> Whenever I see it, I cannot help but notice how bright, expressive, and celebratory it is.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
