Earlier in the month, a friend and I decided to board the train<\/strong><\/a> from Sorrento to Naples<\/strong><\/a> and spend a weekend there. I knew classmates who headed to Rome<\/a> or even as far as Paris, but I wanted to remain in the area\u2014at least for my first trip.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

A Weekend in Napoli: What I did<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

While on the train, I researched more of <\/span>Napoli\u2019s history<\/b>. First founded around 600 BCE as <\/span>Neopolis<\/b> (or \u201cNew City\u201d), Napoli originated as a <\/span>Greek settlement<\/b> and later became a part of the Roman Empire. It was an essential aspect of the Magna Graecia, which refers to areas on the coast of Southern Italy which were colonized by ancient Greek city-states.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

In 1504, the Spanish won Naples and ruled it under feudalism for two more centuries. This led to the formation of Napoli\u2019s <\/span>Spanish Quarters<\/b> (\u201cQuartieri Spagnoli,\u201d \u201cSpanish Barracks\u201d) that were created to house Spanish soldiers who were meant to quell revolts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The best of Napoli's local cusine<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

When I entered Napoli, what struck me most was how varied, mixed, and famous all of the <\/span>food,<\/b> museums,<\/b> and <\/span>art <\/b>were. Like Sorrento, Napoli has a history chock full of <\/span>influential artists<\/b>. Painters like Caravaggio, Gentileschi, and Bernini all hail from\u2014or lived in\u2014Napoli.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Local cuisine included both the very sweet and the very savory!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

On the sweeter side, there was the <\/span>Sfogliatelle<\/b>: an iconic Neopolitan dessert known for thin, layered dough <\/span>baked golden<\/b> and <\/span>served warm<\/b>. Mine was full of a rich, nutty custard that paired well with a cappuccino.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

For fans of more savory fare, I would recommend <\/span>Pizza a Portafoglio <\/b>(\u201cwallet pizza\u201d) for the taste and cost. Often a little smaller than a typical pie, Pizza a Portafoglio is folded into four and then<\/span> served hot and fresh <\/b>in a paper wrap. <\/span>While pizza itself is one of Napoli\u2019s most well-known inventions, <\/b>this street food innovation is both delicious and convenient.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Historical Sites \u2013 The Napoli Sotterranea\u00a0<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

On our last day in Napoli, we went to the <\/span>Napoli Sotterranea<\/b> (\u201cNapoli Underground\u201d). Located in <\/span>Piazza San Gaetano, our tour was led to and from sites tied to various eras.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

First built by Greeks to <\/span>mine tuff blocks,<\/b> the Napoli <\/span>Sotterranea<\/span> became an <\/span>aqueduct<\/b> in Ancient Rome and was later used as<\/span> an air-raid shelter in WWII.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Some of the Napoli <\/span>Sotterranea<\/span> was so narrow <\/span>I had to crawl<\/b> to reach the other side. I could not believe how much the Napoli <\/span>Sotterranea had seen\u2014it was odd to realize I was <\/span>one of millions<\/b> who had walked down those tunnels, and even more so to understand that most who had seen it were alive far before me.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
