Thick, cold stone hewn into a barrier. Lush, soft moss that thickets mortar. A clear, cloudless horizon. <\/strong>This is what I saw at Sorrento<\/strong> ancient walls<\/a>, now recovered from Bastione Parsano and Bastione St. Valerio.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n

It halted the breath. It was a hot afternoon and even through sweat and exhaustion all I could do was stare out at the view that acred out beneath me<\/strong>\u2026 Sorrento, the earth, and the sea. Stairs were dotted to and fro which allowed me to wander, unheeded, to see whatever I could.<\/p>\n

Near Corso Italia<\/b>, I was shocked to realize how near Il Bastione di Parsano had been to me the entire time I\u2019d been in Sorrento. It made me wonder <\/span>how much I must miss <\/b>when I walk around here, if a site of this much relevance was able to remain unnoticed to me for four weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The Past of Sorrento\u2019s Ancient Walls<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

These stone walls <\/span>once defended Sorrento<\/b> from military invasions. First built by Greeks in 4 B.C., this stone prevented the Samnite invasion in 420 B.C. from further encroachment into Naples.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Samnite were an <\/span>ancient Italic people<\/b> who lived in Samnium, located in modern inland Abruzzo, who were <\/span>enemies of the Romans<\/b> who were later assimilated into the Roman Empire.<\/span><\/p>\n

Some sections of these walls survived until <\/span>16 A.D.<\/b>, when the Spanish Empire rebuilt the walls to be what we now know to halt the <\/span>Saracen invasion<\/b>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSaracen\u201d<\/b> is a word oft used in <\/span>medieval Europe<\/b> to denote people who lived near what Ancient Romans referred to as Arabia Petraea and Deserta. The spread of Islam caused Europeans to use \u201cSaracen\u201d to refer to Muslims, as well. <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

A More Modern Context<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Similar to the Marina Grande\u2019s <\/span>Greek Gate<\/b><\/a>, Il Bastione di Parsano is one of the oldest sites in Sorrento. It can be hard to remember how old it is here, <\/span>how much is contained in this coastline<\/b>. It daunts me, a little, to think back on the amount of stuff\u2014literal, actual stuff\u2014has been traded, created, and broken here.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Il Bastione di Parsano, in the Sorrento\u2019s Ancient Walls, was recovered and restored due to <\/span>public co-financing<\/b> between the <\/span>Ministry of Culture<\/b> and the <\/span>Municipality of Sorrento<\/b>, two interventions which aim to preserve the historical sites and heritage of the city. Admission is free from 10AM to 1PM <\/span>and<\/b> 7PM to 11PM.<\/span><\/p>\n

We can never erase those who came before us. Evidence of our forefathers and foremothers surrounds us, and it is relevant that <\/span>we remember not only them<\/b>, <\/span>but<\/b> the structures and <\/span>architecture<\/b> which often outlasts them<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/span>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
