Even the definition of the name\u2014Sorrento\u2014is derived from the Latin Serentum<\/strong> or Sirentum<\/strong>, which means \u201cland of the sirens,\u201d<\/strong> in reference to Homer\u2019s Odyssey<\/strong><\/a>, because Sorrento is also a land of writers.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a tradition of creation <\/strong>that can be felt in the air here. I feel it in the wind and waves and I taste it on the water. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Sorrento\u2019s most famed native writer, Torquato Tasso<\/strong>, <\/strong>to other writers who made Sorrento their home, it is hard to understate the amount of talent Sorrento stokes in those who know it. <\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

\u201cLove is when he gives you a piece of your soul, that you never knew was missing.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Born in the 1500s, <\/span>Tasso<\/b><\/a> is known best for <\/span>“Gerusalemme Liberata”<\/b> (“Jerusalem Delivered\u201d), a fictionalized epic that depicts the First Crusade.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Known for both a balance between profound emotion and vicious battle, Tasso\u2019s work is rife with <\/span>honor, toil, and heroics<\/b> nonetheless carry an undercurrent of the <\/span>melancholia<\/b> which mirrored that of his real life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The love\u2014the soul Tasso mentioned above\u2014can be seen in the endless love and tribute Sorrento shows to him.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

He can be seen wherever I turn: the <\/span>Piazza Tasso, Via Tasso, Bar Tasso,<\/b> and even his sister <\/span>Cornelia Tasso\u2019s own house<\/b>, where a 1689 edition of Gerusalemme Liberata is shown.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

I first learned of Nietzsche\u2019s connection to Sorrento at the <\/span>Sorrento Experience Museum<\/b><\/a>.<\/b> He arrived in winter and wrote here a sizable amount of <\/span>\u201cHuman, All Too Human,\u201d <\/b>a book of aphorisms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Nietzsche\u2019s time in Sorrento was turbulent.<\/b> He had broken ties with his mentor Richard Wagner and headed South\u2014where he would <\/span>birth a different school of ideas.<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Much of his later work is informed with a newfound sense of <\/span>tone, environment, and theme<\/b> that make clear an awareness and acknowledgement of his own desire for <\/span>authentic truth<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

It was, after all, Sorrento that Nietzsche found the inspiration to give up his career as a teacher and focus solely on philosophy.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Around a year after the 1905 revolution, Maxim Gorky left Russia to live in Capri. It was there Gorky wrote <\/span>\u201cTales of Italy,\u201d <\/b>a collection of short stories which discuss the lives of Italian workers.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

He would remain in Capri for seven years, before his eventual move to Sorrento, where he lived for nine years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

People like Lenin, Dzerzhinsky, Plekhanov, Lunacharsky and other members of import in Russian politics often visited Gorky in Italy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n


Gorky wrote <\/span>various works<\/b> while he lived in Sorrento, and Italy served as <\/span>robust inspiration for his craft<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
