About Sorrento 2027: The Theme

With the eighth edition of the About Sorrento Photo Contest, we return to the invitation to tell the story of the Sorrento Peninsula through images that capture its most authentic identity.

For the 2027 About Sorrento Calendar, a theme rooted in the history and culture of the region has been chosen: “The Art of Hospitality.”

For over two centuries, the Sorrento Peninsula has been recognized worldwide not only for the extraordinary beauty of its landscapes, but also for its natural vocation for hospitality, transforming travel into an experience of encounters, traditions, culture, and sharing.

This theme invites us to observe the region from a different perspective, using photography to tell the story of people, places, gestures, and details that express the value of hospitality and the profound bond between the local community and those who choose to visit.

The art of hospitality: a 250-year history

The tradition of hospitality on the Sorrento Peninsula has its roots in the 18th and 19th centuries, when the phenomenon of the Grand Tour transformed Sorrento from a mere transit point to a favored destination for artists, intellectuals, and travelers from across Europe.

It was precisely during those years that the area began to build its international identity, not only thanks to its landscapes, but also through a culture of hospitality that left an indelible impression on all who stayed there.

According to local historical accounts, this vocation began in 1777, when a Jesuit residence was transformed first into an inn and then a hotel, giving rise to what is conventionally considered the first hospitality facility on the Sorrento Peninsula.

Since then, hospitality and culture have become intertwined, becoming distinctive elements of Sorrento’s identity.

Villa Fiorentino, now a symbol of Sorrento’s cultural life, also finds its place within this history.

Built between 1935 and 1936 by Antonino Fiorentino and Lucia Cuomo, longtime artisans specializing in the production of fine embroidered handkerchiefs, the villa began as a private residence but from the very beginning represented an expression of the local culture, elegance, and entrepreneurial prowess.

The Fiorentino family subsequently decided to donate the villa to the city of Sorrento so that it could become a place dedicated to culture.

From this important gesture, the Sorrento Foundation was founded in 2006. Since 2007, it has promoted exhibitions, events, artistic activities, and initiatives dedicated to enhancing the historical, cultural, artisanal, and food and wine heritage of the Sorrento Peninsula.

2027 is a particularly significant year for the area.

It marks 250 years of hospitality tradition on the Sorrento Peninsula and 20 years of cultural activity for the Sorrento Foundation.

Two anniversaries that tell a single story: that of a community that, over time, has transformed hospitality into a true art form.

Welcoming means sharing one’s heritage, enhancing one’s identity, and narrating the region through the beauty of its landscapes, its people, its traditions, its crafts, its art, its events, and all those details that make the Sorrento Peninsula unique.

As usual, 12 photographs will be selected to be included in the About Sorrento 2027 Calendar, while the authors of the winning shots will receive free copies of the official calendar.
