Sorrento is nestled on the peninsula that divides the Bay of Naples from the Amalfi Coast and it has a perfect view of Mount Vesuvius.
It is a Mediterranean paradise known for its lemon groves, marinas, beaches, historic town center, and shopping.
Sorrento is the perfect place to stay, not only for its features but also because it is accessible to other Southern Italian destinations.
For those in Sorrento who are looking to explore other parts of the Campagnia region, here are some day-trips that can easily be done!
Naples
To get to Sorrento by train or plane, you must arrive in Naples which is a perfect place to start exploring!
It is the third largest city in Italy and has deep historical roots dating to before the Greco-Roman age.
Naples is known for their famous foods that originated here like pizza!
Other attractions are the Galleria Umberto, The Spanish Quarter, and the waterfront.
From Sorrento, Naples Garibaldi Station is an hour-and-a-half train ride on the Circumvesuviana line and it is easy to navigate.
Capri
One of the top destinations in the Bay of Naples is Capri, which is an island 30 minutes away from Sorrento by ferry out of Marina Piccola.
Upon arrival, there are beaches, boat rides, and shops in the lower Capri Town.
This is where you can take a boat ride around the island or go into the Blue Grotto cave.
There is an option to take a bus or walk up to Anacapri which is located on the other side of the island and has higher-end shopping and restaurants with beautiful views.
This is how you get to the gondola chair lift ride that shows the incredible views!
Ischia
Another one of the Islands in the bay is Ischia.
It is a larger island that is closer to Naples and is an hour ferry ride from Sorrento.
Ischia is well known for its beaches and thermal baths, so it is a perfect destination for a relaxing afternoon.
In comparison to Capri, Ischia is more of a local island so can be a great place to avoid crowds during tourist season while also getting a more authentic experience.
Positano
Positano is a town on the Amalfi Coast famous for its colorful and steep hillside that contrasts against the blue sea below and is one of the most popular destinations in Southern Italy.
Positano is built on a hill and can be accessed from Sorrento by bus or by ferry.
The bus takes around 45 minutes through the windy mountains and cliffsides and it drops you off at the top of the hill where the main street and shops will lead down to the bottom.
After taking the bus, the ferry is nice to take on the way back so you don’t have to climb back up the hillside and it is only a 30 minute ride.
Amalfi
Amalfi is another beautiful town situated on the opposite side of the peninsula from Sorrento.
It is an hour ferry ride and an hour and a half bus ride to get there, but it is very worth it, especially if you’re looking for a nice beach day.
Each town on the coast has many of the same features, but with their own heart and character so it is a great experience to explore each one.
Many of the towns listed are able to be done in one day like taking a ferry to Positano first and then Amalfi afterwards.
The ferry system is a great way to get around the Bay of Naples and the Amalfi Coast!
For more local places to Sorrento, the Circumvesuviana train line has 35 train stops on the way to Naples and offers many smaller and more local towns to explore as well!
If you are located in Sorrento or planning to travel here, I hope you are able to visit these other neighboring destinations to get the full Southern Italy experience with the beautiful landscapes and culture that the Campania region has to offer!
Ciao,
Emma
